The Ventana Wildlife Society is the organization in Big Sur California that monitors the California Condor population in the area. As I’m sure you know, condors are endangered. They’re vultures and one of their favorite meals is venison. If a deer is shot, but not dropped immediately, it will run away to die. The easiest place for the condor to access meat is through the bullet hole. The bullet leaves lead fragments in the channel which are poisonous to adult condors and are especially so to the chicks. They’ve done autopsies on several of the chicks that died in their nest and the level of lead in their blood was off the chart. That’s why they want to ban lead. In this instance they do have a point. Ironically, using steel ammunition leads to more wounded deer that can run away.
I talked to a lot of their members when I worked down there and most of them said they were not opposed to hunting. They understand if the deer aren’t culled by hunting they over populate the area. I was very surprised by their attitude towards hunting and hunters.

This lead poison scare is not new. It seems to happen every 10 years or so. But what most people don’t know, is that there are lead deposits all across the southern United States. Because the land is littered with millions upon millions of lead musket balls. Fired during the 1st american civil war. Over 150 years ago.

And it has been researched and proven to be not harmful. This information was published and was discussed on gun podcasts, several years ago.
